Hot Drinks For Cold Nights

cocktails for cold nights
On a cold night, few things are as satisfying as a hot drink. Whether you’re relaxing at home or entertaining, these adult beverages are sure to keep you and your guests warm and cheery.

1

Hot wine is simple and very popular. It’s a staple in ski lodges, alpine resorts and in Scandinavian countries where they know how to deal with the cold. Heat a dry red wine on the stove, but don’t bring it to a boil. Serve immediately, or pour it into an insulated carafe if you’re serving a crowd. For special occasions, add an equal amount of aquavit plus orange slices, cinnamon sticks and sugar. Japanese wine, called sake, is usually served hot.

2

Hot buttered rum is an American staple that has been enjoyed since the 1600s. To make this historic concoction, place 1 tablespoon of butter and 1 teaspoon of sugar in a mug. Next, add 2 ounces of dark rum and an equal amount of boiling water. Stir until blended. Then, add boiling water until the mug is full. To finish, sprinkle with ground nutmeg or mulling spices.

If you’re feeling under the weather, you’ll appreciate the comfort and simplicity of a hot toddy. Start by adding a teaspoon of honey and an equal amount of lemon juice to a teacup. Add 1.5 ounces of rum, and top with boiling water. If you prefer, use bourbon or brandy instead.

Even if you’ve never traveled to the Emerald Isle, you can certainly enjoy a traditional Irish coffee. Combine 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1.5 ounces of Irish whiskey or Baileys Irish Cream in a warm mug. Stir well. Fill with freshly brewed coffee, and top with whipped cream.

We dare you to leave empty-handed once you’ve seen our selection, which includes reds, whites, zinfandels, port, sherry, box wines, and much more. Meanwhile, here’s an overview of basic wine types. Wines are categorized into five main styles that encompass hundreds of grape varieties and winemaking techniques: Red wine is a still wine made from black grapes that range from light to dark, bone-dry to sweet. White wine is a still wine produced with green and sometimes black grapes. This style ranges from rich and creamy to light and zesty. Rosé wine is a still wine from black grapes produced by removing the skins before deeply coloring the wine. It can also be produced by blending red and white, and both dry and sweet styles are common. Sparkling wine involves a secondary fermentation that produces bubbles. It can be red, white, or rosé, and the tastes range from minerally to rich and sweet. Fortified wine is typically a dessert wine that is fortified with spirits, but there are also many dry fortified wines like dry sherry. Styles have different levels of sweetness, primarily a result of the type of winemaking. Dry wines result from all of the grape sugars being fermented into alcohol. Some might contain a hint of residual sugar meant to add body. Semi-sweet, or off-dry, wine leaves a hint of the sugars in a wine mostly to complement the acidity and/or the aroma. Sweet wines leave a lot of the sugars unfermented. They typically have less alcohol if not fortified, such as common moscato wines.
